Christ Church Capital Campaign
Building on a Tradition of Faith

Message from the Co-Chairs – Jennifer and Todd Rossel

“…arrangements have been made for the erection of a new Gothic church edifice in the district of Tashua.
The requisite funds have been promptly contributed…”

- Proceedings from Diocese of Connecticut, 1846

The responsibilities of the impending capital campaign, so vital to our future, caused us to spend some time reviewing our past.
We borrowed some materials from the parish office, including the captivating stories of Jack Kelly’s “Tashaway Chronicles,”
and our  proud nomination for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.  It is rather humbling to read of the vision and
sacrifices of others before us who, starting in 1760, led the eventual construction of three church buildings, the most recent of which,
the one we worship in today, was built in 1846.  Now, over two hundred years later, we are preparing to embark on a project that
will establish a new chapter in the history of Christ Church, one that will ensure that our church grows and remains strong for future
generations, and at the same time will link us forever to those founders and dreamers of prior centuries.

“…they were just ordinary people like us – farmers, for the most part.  Some were tradesman – like coopers, iron mongers,
leathermen…we also had some soldiers…”

- The Tashaway Chronicles

Our capital campaign will be short and focused.  It will last just five weeks, beginning on October 30 and running until December 4.
The success of the campaign will depend on all of us, each with an important part to play.  We wonder: how  will the time and money
we will be asking each to invest compare with the “ordinary people” of those early congregations?  Using any inflationary index available,
we find it hard to imagine that our sacrifices will be greater.  Our Steering Committee members will soon be calling on many of you for assistance;
we hope responses will be swift and affirmative.  In this case, the whole – and the satisfaction - will be far greater than the sum of its parts.
There will be a series of activities, which will be communicated to you, but please be sure to mark one date on your calendar: Sunday, November 20.
 A campaign brunch that day will be the one event that brings us all together for the work of the campaign.  A great kick-off to the holiday season!

“…any church so rich in inherited treasure is worthy of the interest of present-day parishioners…”

- The Bridgeport Post, July 17, 1938

After reading through the historical entries, it hits us: we’re building on a tradition of faith. Christ Church “is the oldest extant
house of worship in Trumbull…and a survivor of rare integrity from the opening years of the Victorian era.  The building incorporates
advanced design practices of its period, despite being a modest rural parish.”  Our church ancestors were prescient, and they didn’t
cut corners.  The structure is “stylistically notable not only within Trumbull, but also Connecticut,” partly because of “its remarkable
physical integrity, respected and maintained throughout a century and a half of parish use.”  It was built with love and purpose;
but mainly it was built to last.

Now it is our turn.  We look forward to working with each of you.
